We'll look at the human cost of the ongoing Strait of Hormuz crisis and what it reveals about the practical limits of seaworthiness as currently understood. Closer to home, we'll unpack the Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner's recent focus on cruise ship crew conditions, the coastal trading exemption at the center of that debate, and the unintended market consequences a change could trigger. The throughline: seafarer welfare isn't a peripheral HR concern; but rather a live seaworthiness risk the industry can no longer treat as incidental and as an afterthought.

Alison Cusack is the founder and principal of Cusack & Co, a boutique maritime and shipping law firm based in Melbourne assisting in cargo claims, charterparties, bills of lading, demurrage and detention, force majeure, and sanctions compliance.
