Captain Joseph Alphonse is the founding member of Almarco Maritime Pty Ltd., Almarco is an Australian marine services company based in Melbourne and specialising in marine consultancy and surveying services.  His involvement in the marine industry spans a period of over 30 years. Capt. Alphonse obtained his Master’s Foreign Going Certificate of Competency in 1993 from The New Zealand Maritime School at Auckland, New Zealand. He has also recently completed the revalidation exercise in accordance with the current Manila amendments to the STCW convention at the Australian Maritime College in Launceston, Tasmania.    He also holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Keele University, United Kingdom.

​Capt. Alphonse has more recently served as a marine Risk Consultant for Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS), being part of Allianz Australia Ltd. He held this role for a period of over 7 years. At AGCS  he  was involved in the direction and management of marine transportation risks for large projects in Australia, worth billions of dollars. Capt. Alphonse was also the key advisor to marine underwriters based in the Asia-Pacific on various marine cargo and hull matters. Capt. Alphonse headed the marine risk management for the QCLNG project, GLNG project, APLNG project, AWD project, Roy Hill project, Hornsdale wind farm project and the Sapphire wind farm project.

​Prior to his time at AGCS, Capt. Alphonse held various senior management positions in shore based shipping organisations. His shore based experience spans a wide breath of experience from marine superintendent positions in safety and quality management to operational positions, managing commercial bulk and container shipping operations.

​Capt. Alphonse has close ties with members of the shipping industry in Australia and in South-east Asia, who are particularly involved in  container and oil trades. He also maintains close liaison with the local port and marine industry and has frequent discussion on matters of mutual interest.

​Capt. Alphonse is qualified as an associate member of ‘Australia and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance’ (ANZIIF). He is also a member of ‘Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors’ (AIMS) and the ‘International Institute of Marine Surveyors’ (IIMS). He has a Certificate IV in General Insurance from ‘Australia and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance’ (ANZIIF) and is currently pursuing a Diploma in General Insurance with ANZIIF.

​Capt. Alphonse will be presenting on the topic of Marine Warranties in Project Cargo.
